Education & Experience

Lauren brings a wide range of experience and skills to the business. With a First Class Honours Degree in Jewellery Design and a Master of Arts in Glass, Lauren shows skills in usable consumer design with a working knowledge of her materials.  Lauren was first trained in glass whilst studying at the University of Central Lancashire 2000 - 2003.

In 2002 Lauren initiated her own self study trip to Kenya to live and work with traditional Maasai glass-makers. The self negotiated trip consisted of living and working with a Maasai tribe on the border of Nairobi at Kitengela Glass Studios. During this 5 week placement she experienced new and old glass techniques, designed pieces for their current working projects (mainly a large glass wall for the American Embassy, Nairobi) and assisted in organising a private exhibition (Bush-Glass 2004, Nairobi). "The experience is truly unforgettable, the people, the animals and the atmosphere was always welcoming and vibrant. If you want to experience a trip which is different and unique I recommend you visit it for yourself."

"Kitengela Glass Studios, located opposite the Nairobi National Park, is reached by an atrocious road of dust and rocks in the dry season, and raging rivers and mud in the rainy season. Yet the stream of visitors from all over the world never stops. There is a magical ambiance, consisting of the sculptures and mosaic pathways, the animals (real and sculptural) everywhere and the niches of busy artisans all engrossed in different projects."  Nothing is wasted! Even the smallest shards are reused, first in sun-catchers then mosaics and finally re-melted in the bead hut to form the spun beads that have become famous as being the only glass beads made in East Africa, where the famous Masai beadwork comes from. The recycled bead shower curtains are popular and can you believe this - keep out mosquitoes! The place is situated in a particularly dry spot of the semi-arid plains south of Nairobi just beyond the National Park. Animals, wild and tame are everywhere. Giant pigs, camels, horses, mule and donkeys, ostriches, Rottweilers and Dachshunds, the Egyptian Vulture (the Kitengela mascot), and the odd leopard or wailing hyena, not forgetting the river pythons that regularly feed on the poultry all abound. As we always say "Never a dull day!" www.kitengela-glass.com

In 2003 Lauren decided to join the MA glass programme at the University of Sunderland after being encouraged to apply by the Programme Leader whom she met whilst exhibiting at New Designers 2003, London. The intensive12 month course consisted of access to Europe's finest glass making facilities, with outstanding technical support. The Masters of Arts course was a flexible learning year in which the students could express their artistic style and achieve their creative goals freely. After completing the MA in July 2004 Lauren established LB Glass Design to continue with her passion for glass and love of quality hand-made objects.

Lauren was awarded a place on 'Artists Placement Programme 2005', Arts Council, England, North East, and was working with 'xsite', a Newcastle based architectural practice. This placement enabled Lauren to obtain a wider understanding of businesses and project management in design. This opportunity was a great way to obtain contacts, try out new ideas and understand how a business operates. The host business benefited from a different approach in design skills, fresh ideas and also future contacts.
